Welcome! The Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) is dedicated to supporting nurses across Newfoundland and Labrador through advocacy, professional development, and community engagement. Membership in the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter is open to nurse practitioners (NPs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), registered nurses (RNs), registered psychiatric nurses (RPNs), nursing students, and retired nurses who are members in good standing with CNA.

Key dates for prospective Newfoundland and Labrador chapter executive candidates

    • Any NP, LPN, RN, RPN, nursing student, or retired nurse who is a member in good standing of the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter of CNA may apply
    • Deadline to become a member: December 5, 2025

  3. Voting eligibility
    • To be eligible to vote (if you wish to participate as a candidate and voter), you must be a member by January 2, 2026

  5. Announcement of results
    • Executive committee announced: January 26–30, 2026

Follow these steps to apply for a position in the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter:

  1. Confirm CNA membership: Ensure you are a current member of CNA and the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter. You are eligible to join the Chapter based on your workplace or home address being within Newfoundland and Labrador.
  2. Review available positions: Explore the leadership and committee roles listed below.
  3. Submit your application: Watch for calls for nominations and submit your application as directed. The Chapter executive committee and nominating committee will review applications to ensure eligibility and representation requirements are met.
  4. Election and appointment: Eligible candidates may be elected or appointed according to the Chapter’s procedures. Terms and responsibilities are defined for each role.

Available positions

Co-chairs – (two positions available)

There are two co-chair positions available. These are positions for senior executive officers who jointly preside over the Chapter executive committee.

  • Provide strategic leadership, supervise Chapter activities, and ensure compliance with CNA by-laws and policies.
  • Lead meetings, delegate duties, oversee planning and finances, represent the Chapter within CNA, and support succession planning.

Treasurer – (one position available)

  • Advises the executive committee on financial matters and ensures proper financial management.
  • Develops and reviews financial policies, drafts annual budgets, prepares financial reports, and assists with audits.

Secretary - (one position available)

  • Manages administrative, communications, and record-keeping functions.
  • Documents meeting minutes, maintains records, manages correspondence, and prepares meeting agendas.

Members-at-large – (five positions available)

  • Represent geographical regions within the Chapter when no other member is available.
  • Participate in executive committee meetings and represent the interests of members from their region.

Any NP, LPN, RN, RPN, nursing student, or retired nurse who is a member in good standing of the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter of CNA may apply.

Non-members may attend Chapter meetings and events as guests, but only members in good standing of the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter of CNA can vote or hold office.

Positions include two co-chairs, treasurer, secretary, committee members, and members-at-large. Each role has specific responsibilities outlined above.

Watch for calls for nominations and submit your application as directed. The Chapter executive committee and nominating committee will review applications.

Candidates may be elected or appointed. If no suitable candidates are found after two nomination calls, the representation requirements may be waived.

Officers serve for three years. Non-officer Chapter executive committee members may serve up to two years, with the possibility of renewal.

Members must actively contribute, attend meetings, and uphold CNA values, including diversity, equity and inclusion.

A position may be declared vacant if a member misses three consecutive meetings or more than 50% of meetings annually.

Yes. Removal from office does not bar re-election at a later date.
