Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): CNA and AAN Membership

CNA and the Alberta Association of Nurses (AAN) are excited to bring you this exciting new membership initiative! We recognize that CNA and AAN members may have questions and concerns. We appreciate your understanding during this transition year.

Starting July 1, 2025, all eligible AAN members will receive a CNA General membership. Once activated, you will receive a welcome email from CNA with more information.

CNA memberships are non-refundable. However, your current CNA membership will be extended until June 30, 2026, to align with the AAN membership term. After that, CNA General membership will be included with your AAN membership moving forward.

If you are an existing CNA General or Student member who is also a member of AAN, your current CNA General or Student membership will be extended until June 30, 2026, to align with your AAN membership. For premium members and Fellows, see more details below.

CNA certification is not affected. As a CNA member, you continue to receive discounted pricing for your initial certification exam or renewal.

Yes, Alberta nurses can still join CNA directly. See membership options and rates.

CNA General membership is included as a benefit of AAN membership and is not optional. We encourage you to explore the many professional and personal benefits of being part of CNA.

Yes, retired nurses who are members of AAN get a CNA membership. You will receive a welcome email once your CNA membership is activated.

Yes, student members receive a CNA Student membership through AAN. Once your CNA membership is activated, you will receive a welcome email with additional information.

If you are an AAN member and CNA Premium member, there is no change to your current CNA membership for now. When you are due to renew your Premium membership we will set you up as a General member and your membership term will be extended to align with the AAN membership term. To maintain a Premium CNA membership, you will need to sign in to your CNA account and choose Upgrade to a Premium membership. You will only pay the difference from General to Premium at a pro-rated amount based on the number of months left until the next July membership cycle.

Your AAN membership provides a CNA General membership. For a CNA Premium membership, log in to your CNA account and choose Upgrade to a Premium membership. You will only pay the difference from General to Premium!

Premium membership includes all the benefits of General membership and is aimed at building leadership in nursing. The membership offers exclusive access to the Canadian Journal of Nursing Leadership (CJNL) as well as resources available through the Canadian Academy of Nursing and eligibility to become a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Nursing (FCAN). If you are an AAN member and a Fellow with the Canadian Academy of Nurses, there is no change to your current CNA membership for now. Your AAN membership covers the value of a CNA General membership. When you are due to renew your Fellowship, you will be invoiced for the amount remaining for your Premium membership and Fellowship credential ($282).
