Guiding Principle 6.3

Guiding Principle 6.3: Nurses contribute to the ongoing development of the nursing profession.

Context for Practice: Nurses play a proactive role in shaping the future of the profession by advancing the nursing profession and supporting both current and future nurses. Nurses strive toward excellence in the ongoing development of the profession. Their contributions support current nurses in refining their skills and guiding future nurses through mentorship and education, which in turn helps the nursing profession evolve and adapt, ultimately improving ethical care, services and/or supports and interprofessional relationships.

Ethical Responsibilities: Nurses contribute to the ongoing development of the profession by
6.3.1 engaging others in the process of collective learning that critically reflects on the nursing profession;
6.3.2 treating each other with respect and honesty while recognizing the power differentials among formal leaders, peers and students;
6.3.3 providing supervision, preceptorship, consultation and mentorship to nursing students, novice nurses, and unregulated care providers by sharing their knowledge and offering feedback;
6.3.4 informing clients and requesting permission for a student to provide care;
6.3.5 prioritizing the client’s well-being above the responsibility of providing learning opportunities to students; and
6.3.6 reporting and addressing identified incidents of disrespectful actions toward students.

In addition, nurses in formal and informal leadership (e.g., administration, clinical care, education, policy and research) roles support nursing students by

6.3.7 ensuring that supervisors, preceptors, and mentors are provided appropriate supports and equitable opportunities for training to provide high-quality learning experiences; and
6.3.8 creating and adhering to guidelines and reporting mechanisms to address incidents of disrespectful actions toward students, including supporting nurses who report such incidents (whistleblowers).
