Shoulder surgery no quick fix

Treating severe shoulder dislocations with physiotherapy and a sling is as effective as surgery, according to research published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma. Eighty-three patients with moderate to severe acromio-clavicular joint dislocations were assigned to surgical and non-surgical groups, and tracked for two years. Seven of the 40 surgical patients, but only two non-surgical patients, experienced major complications. Non-surgical patients had greater mobility at six weeks and three months post-surgery, but there were no differences between the two groups at six months. However, surgical patients reported greater satisfaction with the appearance of their shoulder at one year and two years post-surgery.
