RNs share ideas and celebrate in Halifax

“Registered nurses are not replaceable.” With these words, Judith Shamian, in her inaugural speech as CNA president, brought the convention audience to their feet, articulating what had been a recurring message over the three-day event. The convention saw close to 600 people come together for concurrent presentations, round-table discussions and plenary sessions on a wide range of topics, including staff mix, collaborative practice, education and regulation.

Report on fatigue recommends actions at many levels

CNA and the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario are releasing an important research report this month. Nurse Fatigue and Patient Safety represents a clarion call to the health-care system, health-care organizations, governments, nursing associations, unions, regulatory bodies, educators — and nurses themselves — about the rising levels of nurse fatigue. Such fatigue is largely due to the relentless heavy workloads of nurses with ever-increasing cognitive, psychosocial and physical work demands.

The following text is taken from the report’s executive summary.
